Operating Model Design

The design of how an organization structures its people, processes, technology, and governance to deliver its strategy.

Definition

What is Operating Model Design?

An operating model is the translation of business strategy into the organizational design, processes, capabilities, and governance mechanisms required to deliver it. Operating model design involves answering: How are we organized (structure, spans of control, decision rights)? How do we work (core processes, workflows, handoffs)? What capabilities do we need (skills, technology, data)? How do we govern and make decisions? An operating model design engagement produces a Target Operating Model (TOM) that specifies the future state across all these dimensions and a transformation roadmap to get there.

Why It Matters

Most organizations have operating models designed for a prior era — built around centralized IT departments, manual processes, and siloed functions. As business models shift to digital and as speed becomes the primary competitive variable, legacy operating models become structural constraints. Redesigning the operating model is often the highest-leverage lever available to a CEO seeking to materially improve organizational performance — more so than any individual technology or process initiative.

How It Works

Operating model design follows a structured approach: strategy alignment (connecting operating model choices to competitive priorities), current-state analysis (process mapping, capability assessment, cost structure), design principles (guiding constraints for the target model), option development (alternative model configurations), design finalization (detailed TOM specification), business case development, and implementation planning.

Our Approach

Paxanimi's Approach to Operating Model Design

Paxanimi's operating model design practice combines management consulting methodology with hands-on technology execution capability. We design operating models and implement the technology platforms, process automation, and organizational changes required to bring them to life. Our work spans enterprise-wide operating model redesigns for corporations and function-specific redesigns (IT operating model, security operating model, data operating model) within larger organizations.
