What is MTTD / MTTR?
Mean Time to Detect (MTTD) is the average time elapsed between when an attacker first gains access to an environment and when the security team becomes aware of the intrusion. Mean Time to Respond (MTTR) is the average time between detection and full containment. Together, MTTD and MTTR are the primary operational metrics of a Security Operations Center. Industry benchmarks for MTTD average 194 days (IBM, 2024) — meaning attackers often have months of undetected access. Leading SOC providers target sub-15-minute MTTD for confirmed indicators.
Why It Matters
The cost of a breach scales directly with dwell time — the total time an attacker is present in the environment.
