CIEM (Cloud Infrastructure Entitlement Management)
Tools that discover and right-size excessive permissions in cloud environments to enforce least-privilege at scale.
Definition
What is CIEM (Cloud Infrastructure Entitlement Management)?
Cloud Infrastructure Entitlement Management (CIEM) addresses the explosion of identities and permissions in cloud environments — human users, service accounts, roles, and machine identities that collectively create an entitlement sprawl that is impossible to manage manually. CIEM platforms discover all identities across cloud accounts, analyze their effective permissions versus their actual usage, and identify excessive permissions that violate least-privilege principles. This is critical for preventing privilege escalation attacks, where an attacker gains initial access through a compromised low-privilege identity and then escalates via excessive permissions.
Why It Matters
The average enterprise cloud environment contains 3× more machine identities than human identities, and studies show 90% of cloud identities use fewer than 5% of the permissions they've been granted. This permission sprawl is the leading enabler of cloud lateral movement after initial access. CIEM is the complementary technology to CSPM — CSPM finds configuration issues, CIEM finds permission issues — and both are required for comprehensive cloud security.
How It Works
CIEM tools connect to cloud provider identity services (AWS IAM, Azure AD, GCP IAM) and analyze the gap between granted permissions and actual usage over a rolling time window. They identify unused permissions, over-privileged roles, cross-account escalation paths, and Shadow IT access. Recommendations are automatically generated to right-size permissions to the minimum required for function.
Our Approach
Paxanimi's Approach to CIEM (Cloud Infrastructure Entitlement Management)
Paxanimi implements CIEM alongside CSPM as part of a comprehensive cloud security posture program. We design least-privilege IAM architectures from the ground up for greenfield deployments, and right-size existing permission structures through CIEM analysis for mature environments. For organizations using AWS, we leverage IAM Access Analyzer and AWS Identity Center; for multi-cloud environments, we implement third-party CIEM platforms.
